The Hole and the Lump

Interstate Projects is pleased to present The Hole and the Lump, Rachel de Joode’s first solo exhibition in New York.

“The approach of a sculpture is the possibility for the viewer to turn around it, appreciate the space and volume, from the bottom up or from the left to right, measuring the most appropriate angle.” 12-52 Project.

In this exhibition, de Joode examines the fundamentals of sculpture: volume, material, texture, and scale, by transforming them through contemporary means of representation. Pushed and pulled terra cotta is photographed, printed on un-stretched canvas, and draped over a model in classical figurative poses. Pedestals are printed, rather than produced as volumetric shapes, and the sculptures that sit on them are no thicker than the wood they are mounted to.

De Joode is interested in the representation of physical objects through photographic documentation, specifically as it relates to our experience of viewing the image as “art documentation” on the Internet. The three dimensional object is rarely the final artwork. Sculptural representation, sculptural materials, and sculptural space are all reconfigured through a two-dimensional lens, and returned back into the three dimensional world.

Rachel de Joode (b.1979, Amersfoort, Netherlands) currently lives and works in Berlin. She studied time-based arts at Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Amsterdam. She is the founder and art director of Meta Magazine, and the founder and curator of the art auction house de Joode and Kamutzki. Her work has been exhibited internationally in Europe, North America, and Asia. Recent solo exhibitions include Real Things – Explorations in Three Dimensions, Oliver Francis Gallery, Dallas, TX, and Light Trapped in Matter, City Gallery, Tallinn, Estonia. Recent group shows and performances include Wobbly Misconduct, LVL3, Chicago; Seeing the Future, Future Gallery, Berlin; and Tropico Post – Apocalyptic, extra extra gallery, Philadelphia. In 2012 de Joode was awarded a Sculpture Space residency in Utica, NY. This year de Joode was awarded the Deutsche Börse Residency Program at the Frankfurter Kunsteverein, and was recently chosen for an LMCC Swing Space residency for 2013 in New York.
